What Do Garage Door Sensors Do?
Since the early 1990s, U.S. residential garage door openers have been required to include entrapment-protection features, and photo-eye sensors have become the most common setup — two small sensors mounted near the bottom of each track, roughly 4–6 inches off the ground, that shine an infrared beam across the doorway. If that beam is broken while the door is closing, the opener reverses the door instead of continuing to close, to prevent it from closing on a person, pet, or object. When sensors are misaligned, dirty, or wired incorrectly, the door may refuse to close, reverse without an obvious obstruction, or only close while you hold down the wall button.
Common Sensor Problems
Door reverses before it touches the ground
This is the most common sensor symptom. Even a slight misalignment between the two sensors, often from being bumped, can trigger this.
Door only closes while holding the wall button
Most openers are designed to only close in this “manual hold” mode when the safety sensor circuit isn’t sending a clear signal.
Sensor lights are off, blinking, or solid when they shouldn’t be
Most sensors have small indicator LEDs. A light that’s off, dim, or blinking irregularly often points to a wiring or power issue.
Dirty or obstructed sensor lenses
Dust, cobwebs, or direct sunlight hitting the sensor lens at certain times of day can interfere with the beam.
Things You Can Safely Check Yourself
- Wipe the sensor lenses clean with a soft cloth
- Check that both sensor brackets are pointing at each other, not tilted
- Look for anything blocking the beam between the two sensors
- Check that the sensor indicator lights are on
- Note if the problem happens at a specific time of day (could be sunlight interference)
If these checks don’t resolve it, the issue is likely wiring, a failing sensor, or an opener-side problem that needs a proper diagnostic.

Why are my garage door sensor lights blinking?
A steady, non-blinking light usually means the sensors are aligned correctly, while a blinking or flickering LED signals that the sensors are misaligned, blocked, or wired incorrectly. Your door may also refuse to close, or reverse immediately, until the alignment is fixed.
Can I realign the sensors myself?
Sometimes. Gently loosen each sensor’s mounting bracket, make sure both units face each other directly, and check that the lens is clean and clear of dust or cobwebs. If the light still flickers after that, the bracket may be bent or the wiring damaged, which needs a technician to fix safely.
